English Language Program

Academic Programs

Program Overview

The PAE (Program in Academic English) follows the same course of study used by Stony Brook University and Fashion Institute of Technology home campuses in New York. The program is designed for matriculated undergraduate students whose writing has been evaluated by PAE professors and who have been placed into a level appropriate for their English and writing abilities.

SBU students are placed in one of four levels in the writing program – WAE 192 High Intermediate Writing Academic English, WAE 194 Advanced Writing Academic English, WRT 101 Introductory Writing Workshop, or WRT 102 Intermediate Writing Workshop. Each course must be taken and passed before advancing to the next level, and upon passing WRT 102, students will satisfy their writing requirements at Stony Brook.

FIT students are placed in one of three levels in the writing program – ES 023/024 English as a Second Language Workshop, ES 123 English as a Second Language, or EN 131 English Composition. Upon passing EN 131, students must take either EN 231 Short Fiction or EN 242 Public Speaking. Completing this sequence will satisfy the writing requirements at FIT.

IEC students are placed in one of three levels in the writing program – 112 Intermediate, 113 High Intermediate, or 114 Advanced. Each course must be taken and passed before advancing to the next level, and upon passing 114, students will matriculate and join the mainstream program at Stony Brook. However, students in level 112 or 113 can also matriculate if they pass the course and receive a satisfactory score on an English Proficiency Exam (such as TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, etc.).
